Meet an Artist: Woodie Anderson

"A bright future: I am really inspired by Andy Warhol and what he had to say as he got older, his encouragement to artists to just do and create and don't worry about whether or not it's art. Just go ahead and make it and do it and get it out there, and let someone else decide if it is art. I have really taken that to heart because otherwise you can get tripped up trying to figure things out and you start editing yourself too soon. You aren't going to get much done that way."

Gifts with an artistic vibe
Charlotte Observer, EYE Magazine,  12/11/07
Affordable Art - Want something that only gets better? A mixed media serigraph by Woodie Anderson. Described as smart, focused and playful, these strong works influenced by ’70s feminist art are an affordable way to jump into the art market. Maybe a conversation piece by Laurie Wiesner-Phillips. “Acht Gresicht” has eight faces made from gears, bells, old pipes and horseshoes. This mixed-media piece is striking and very affordable. Take a spin at the Artomat. Put in a token and out pops a piece of art. $100 to $200 for pieces by Woodie Anderson (left); $325 for the piece by Laurie Wiesner-Phillips; $5 for Artomat; all at Canvas Monkey in NoDa, 3306-B N. Davidson St.; 704-335-1536; canvasmonkey.com.

"Woodie loves the challenge of creating pocket-size art. "the Art-omat is a great fit because it allows me to explore different techniques and creat variations on a theme". Her primary focus tends to be on mixed-media serigraphs (or screen prints), but she does some fiber work and more traditional painting."

"Anderson is a master of color as she uses contrasting layers of ink to create depth. Background space is thoughtfully utilized while fragmented collages of found objects and images create a masquerade of text and white noise.

Most of the works in the show are embellished with free-form sewing-machine stitch wizardry, which adds texture in all the right places. Depending on the context, Anderson uses stitches to enhance the printed lines of some pieces, while in others it's more severe and raw, giving the sensation of battle scars and resiliency."

"Thematically, Anderson's works reflect the influence of 1970s feminist art. Her stylistic precedents include Andy Warhol, poet Kenneth Patchen (whose quirkily text-augmented, expressionistic figure paintings appear on several of his book covers) and punk-rock poster graphics. Although this is a small, relatively low-key show in a less-than-ideal space, it reveals Anderson to be an artist who bears watching."
